How to Use the Text Editor
Overview
The purpose of a text editor is to make the Web page creation process easier. Web pages are built in a language called HTML. A text editor is used like a word processor, however, as information is entered into the editor, it is translated into HTML for you. If you are literate in HTML, or if you would just like to see what your page looks like in HTML, then you can click on the Source Code button at the top, and view the page that way.
Learning Stream includes Tags, which are available in expandable lists on the right side of the screen. The Tags are elements created elsewhere, such as the registration start and end dates, which can be used with other typed text.
Insert the Tags in any order on the page. Position your cursor in the text editor where you want the Tag to appear then click on any Tag you see in brackets. The editor will place that Tag in the designated spot. If you want the event's logo to appear at the top of the page, for example, place your cursor there and then click [EventLogo] in the Event Tags column.
You can change the font style, size, or color of any text Tag once it has been positioned.
You can paste text from other applications into the Learning Stream text editor, however, it's best to make changes after the text has been pasted into the text editor. This will make it easier to edit your text. If you have a typed document you want to copy, paste it into the text editor as plain text. Then make any style changes.
You can highlight the text in the editor box, then click the Clear Formatting button provided:
This will strip out any formatting which may cause issues when it's converted to HTML. You can re-format once the information is in this TinyMCE text editor.
Use Shift+Enter to add a blank row between text, links, and images if hitting enter does not produce the desired result.
How to Insert an Image
1) Click Upload Image/Document at the bottom of the editor.
2) Click Upload New Item.
3) Click Browse to find the image on your computer.
4) Once you have selected the image, click Upload Item.
5) Once you see the image in the upload window, click [Insert Image] to place the image or other file directly into the text editor.
The uploaded image will be part of the list of Event Files. You will also be able to use any items in the Account File Library. Account files are available for any event.
When uploading a .pdf file, you are creating a link to it. Copy the link and then use the Insert Link function on the text editor toolbar to place the link on the page. Do not simply copy and paste the link into the text editor.
How to use tables for colors and graphics
Apply graphics or colors to your theme by inserting tables on your page via the editor toolbar. Right-click within a cell to add a background color or to insert a background image.
How to apply an image as a background:
- Use the “Insert Table” option from the text editor toolbar to create a table.
- Upload an image using the “Upload Image/Document” option in the text editor.
- Copy the URL for the uploaded image from the file library screen.
- Right-click on the cell in the table where you want to add the background image.
- Choose “Cell Properties”.
- Select the box for “Select background image”.
- Paste the URL for the image in the field below it.
Font Sizes in Pixels
Instead of text editor font size options measured in Points (pt), they are now measured in Pixels (px). Points are an old print-based size measure.
You may notice there are more size options than with the points measurements, this is so there are pixel sizes that closely resemble the previous point sizes.
If your text editor still shows points (pt) rather than pixels (px), you will need to empty your cache.
